What’s the lowdown on cockroaches in San Antonio? “Is that a cockroach?” is a common question we get from San Antonio pest control customers. Just when you think you know what a cockroach looks like, you discover another kind – sometimes, unfortunately, in your home or business. It may come as a surprise that these pests come in a variety of breeds, and many of them are found here in the United States. They include:
- American cockroaches (sometimes known as “water bugs”)
- Brown-banded cockroaches
- German cockroaches
- Madagascar hissing cockroaches
- Oriental cockroaches
- Smoky brown cockroaches
- Australian cockroaches
- Field cockroaches
But in Texas, it’s German, American and smoky brown cockroaches that are most often found in and around residential dwellings and commercial establishments. If you have ever wondered why cockroaches (these varieties, in particular) are often found in puddles of water or around swimming pools, it’s because they prefer a moist environment and shade. This also makes the concrete areas around well-irrigated grass lawns welcome breeding grounds for cockroaches.
If they favor these outdoor conditions so much, why would you ever find cockroaches inside? Here’s why: When the environmental conditions become too harsh for the bugs – say, the sun comes out and dries up the grass or sidewalk – then cockroaches, like other insects, may follow the instinct to seek more favorable conditions indoors.
At some point, we’ve all experienced an ant migration into the house in the summer; cockroaches, in various weather conditions, will do the same thing. And in urban areas like New York, Los Angeles and even San Antonio, it should not come as a surprise to see cockroaches indoors more often because so many urban buildings are older, darker and damper than their suburban counterparts. That goes for homes and commercial buildings alike.
If you have a cockroach infestation, you will know it; the bugs are large enough to be visible, day or night. Don’t wait until the problem gets out of hand; contact our San Antonio pest control professionals immediately to schedule a treatment.
