Why Is Winter Pest Control So Different This Year?
Winter pest control in the San Antonio area this year means responding to a combination of summer pests and winter pest problems. Last week, the temperatures were near freezing and this week, we’re supposed to hit the mid 80s. BUGCO Pest Control Co-Owner John Onofrey talks with our Office Manager, Darrell Mather, about the unusual mix of calls we’re receiving this winter.
This video was recorded before BUGCO Houston purchased BUGCO San Antonio in early 2018. However, the challenges of winter pest control in San Antonio are as great as they are in Houston with alternating warm and cold weather.
Summary of Winter Pest Control Video
John Onofrey: So Darrell, what kind of phone calls are you experiencing in our business office nowadays?
Darrell Mather: Well we haven’t seen a decline in the number of calls for general pests such as ants, roaches, silverfish, earwigs. It’s not been cold enough to cause a real solid decrease in numbers, so we’re still getting high-volume calls for mosquitoes.
Then we have irregular cold fronts coming in, and what’s that done is that occasionally drives the rodents inside. They’re gonna be carrying fleas with them when they come in.
So we’re still seeing the same things that we would during the summer months as well as the winter pests as well. We’re getting this really, once again, irregular mix of pests this winter. That being the case, when spring and summer roll around, we’re going to see even higher populations of the common insects, so once again, the ants, roaches, silverfish, earwigs.
John Onofrey: Right.
Darrell Mather: As well as the flea populations and mosquitoes. So with this kind of mixed bag we have, we’re gonna, honestly, we’re gonna have probably a record year for pests.
John Onofrey: Right. Well, so I see that we’ve ordered a lot of equipment for rodents and it seems like we have yet another big season for rats and mice.
Darrell Mather: Yeah, possums, squirrels, wildlife in general, with those irregular cold fronts, they’re gonna find a way in. They bring the fleas with them, then it gets warm again, they leave, then the insects come. So once again, it’s just this back and forth with the insects and the wildlife.
John Onofrey: Awesome.
